Sinopsis
On a remote country estate, a kind-hearted colonel finds himself under the control of a charismatic but manipulative intruder. Foma Fomich Opiskin, a despotic and eccentric charlatan, has taken charge of the household, while Colonel Rostanev, the estate’s owner, endures his humiliations with remarkable patience. As tensions rise, daily life becomes a spectacle of bizarre characters, grotesque situations, and conflicts that are increasingly difficult to contain. Blending comedy, satire, and drama, Dostoevsky explores power, humiliation, vanity, and the struggle between kindness and tyranny. The growing confrontation between Rostanev and Opiskin eventually puts not only the colonel’s dignity but also his love and sense of honor at risk. Written after Dostoevsky’s return from exile, this early novel offers a sharp portrait of a society on the brink of change while anticipating the moral and psychological conflicts that would define his later work.
