Sinopsis

Sacsayhuamán, the House of the Sun, stands as one of the greatest and least understood monuments of the Inca Empire. Overlooking Cusco from a strategic ridgeline, this monumental complex brought together three major ceremonial areas: the Temple of the Sun on the Sacsayhuamán Ridge, the Suchuna or Rodadero, and the Qocha and Chinanas surrounding the Muyuc Cancha basin. This book explores the archaeology, engineering, architecture, cosmology, and paleohydrology of these spaces, examining how the Incas used the interplay of stone and water to give physical form to their understanding of the cosmos. Particular attention is devoted to the construction and meaning of the monumental zigzag Northern Walls, among the most recognizable examples of Inca stonework. The study also addresses the centuries of neglect and deliberate destruction that have placed the Northern Walls and the wider House of the Sun at risk. A detailed exploration of one of Cusco’s most remarkable archaeological complexes and the ideas, technologies, and beliefs embodied in its architecture.
